Polysilicon and the future of Europe’s economic security.
RESiLICON’s CEO, Remco Rijn, recently spoke with Change Inc. about why polysilicon is strategic for Europe, and why rebuilding industrial value chains is now a geopolitical issue, not only an industrial one.
Together with colleague Jan Vesseur, he shared RESiLICON’s perspective on the importance of strengthening Europe’s capabilities in core materials supply.
If Europe is serious about energy transition, digitalisation and industrial sovereignty, the starting point must be with materials such as polysilicon.
The interview highlighted Europe’s dependence on external suppliers for critical components, including polysilicon, wafers and other foundational materials. This level of reliance limits the region’s ability to shape its own industrial future.
With more than 85% of global polysilicon production located outside Europe, the exposure is significant. This level of dependency represents a vulnerability that can no longer be ignored.
RESiLICON’s ambition is clear and focused: to secure Europe’s supply of ultra-pure polysilicon through its planned facility in Groningen. In doing so, the company aims to support resilient European value chains in solar energy, semiconductors and batteries, using renewable energy and efficient production processes.
