RESiLICON’s plan to build an ultra-pure polysilicon production facility at Groningen Seaports is featured in the latest edition of NOMMER magazine, highlighting the project’s role in strengthening Europe’s industrial resilience.
In the article, Building the energy transition and European resilience, RESiLICON CEO Remco Rijn discusses polysilicon’s strategic importance for Europe’s clean energy and digital ambitions, the company’s plans and progress, and the advantages of being based in the northern part of the Netherlands.
As he explains, polysilicon is an essential material for solar panels and semiconductors. However, China accounts for over 93% of global polysilicon production, while Europe has only one polysilicon producer. This concentration underscores the strategic need to strengthen Europe’s industrial capabilities and reduce dependence on overseas suppliers.
“Our plant at Groningen Seaports can therefore become a very important link in that new European production chain,” says Remco.
The interview also highlights RESiLICON’s progress towards realising the facility, which the EU recognised as a Strategic Project under the Net-Zero Industry Act. The company is advancing its engineering and project preparations, and it is targeting a final investment decision for 2027, with construction potentially beginning in 2028.
The importance of regional collaboration
The interview also explores why Groningen is a logical location for the project. Remco highlights the region’s access to renewable energy, port infrastructure and established industrial ecosystem, as well as opportunities to collaborate with neighbouring companies and regional knowledge institutions.
The article features Sytze Hellinga, Energy Investment Manager at NOM, who discusses NOM’s support for RESiLICON, from helping to finance the initial feasibility study to assisting with project development, permitting and financing preparations.
